Making a glass globe in Photoshop
Open a new file on a
transparent layer. ...Say
200 x 200.
Make a circle using the round
marquee tool.( Note: hold down
the shift key to "drag" a perfect
circle).
Click the layers styles icon
and select inner shadow
Play with the settings  until
you get something like this
I like using the
dodge tool to
paint a reflection
such as this.
White paint will
also work.
Be sure to turn
down the opacity
Time to flatten (merge) the image so we can move it
to a background. (If you don't flatten here ...Your
layers wont go with you). Select .."Layers / Flatten
image."
Here I have chosen a teddy bear.
Select the move tool, and then left click the globe
and drag it over to the teddy bear.(steps 1-2).
(You can now close, or lower the ball, as a copy
has been made).
Check out the layers pallet. Now the real fun begins
Click the layers mask icon #1. Note the white window that has now
opened in the globe layer. #2   Now we can use a black and white
paint (brush) to remove or replace parts of our globe # 3-4.
Keep the opacity of the brush down to say 10 and
start in the middle with a Black brush and work
your way out.
(black removes, white replaces
Until you get something like this. If you
take too much off use a white brush to
replace
Be sure to click either the
white box for layer mask, or
the globe if you want to work
on that layer. You must
toggle between the two
The layer
you want to
work on
should be
highlighted.
Just click
that layer to
highlight
Now lets put something inside. With
the move tool drag (left mouse button)
the baby to the teddy bear image.
We now have a new layer added of the baby. I clicked
the layer mask icon again. And with a black brush
selected and with the opacity REALLY low I paint over
the baby to give it a softer look. As it would looking
through glass.
I also went back and selected the ball layer
mask again (white box). Set the opacity to
about 90% and removed parts of the globe to
appear as though the ball is embedded into the
lap of the teddy bear.
Don't forget to highlight the layer you want to
work on. (
I still forget do that all the time)
If you are happy with what you got so far... Flatten the image.
(Merge all the layers to one).
Add snow.  First, make a new
layer. Do this by dragging the
original to the icon next to the trash
can (looks like a little folder).
Important note. Your first layer has
a lock on it. This is to protect and
preserve your original copy so you
don' screw it up. You have very few
options available with this layer and
why you need to make a new layer
that you can screw up and delete if
you wish.
And add a little blur to the snow
Experimenting with all the layers
styles to the left can result in
some interesting effects. Well
worth  the time.
Open a new image for your background
Select a white paint brush and the
dissolve option and lower the
opacity. Sprinkle in some snow
and then select the layer mask
icon again to clean up the edges
as needed.
Here
You can also select the globe with
say the...magnetic lasso tool.
Right click"save as a layer copy"
and then add a drop shadow for
example.
